Founded in 1976, the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of minorities in all aviation and aerospace careers.
OBAP members encourage diversity in the industry by supporting aspiring aviation professionals through mentoring, scholarships, training and youth-focused education programs through Project Aerospace.
About The Conference
OBAP’s Annual Convention and Career Exposition is a three-day aerospace conference designed to unify, engage and empower aviation professionals from diverse backgrounds. Held each August for more than 40 years, this annual event consists of aerospace professional development workshops, notable industry speakers, networking opportunities and a career fair with more than forty participating carriers and companies.
“OBAP’s Career Exposition is one of the largest aerospace fairs in the nation. The continued investment and participation of carriers each year prove the effectiveness of this three-day recruitment event and also speaks to the desirability of OBAP’s highly qualified member base,” Captain James Gordon, past board chairman and pilot, UPS Airlines.
To increase minority participation in future aerospace careers, OBAP hosts numerous events tailored to youth and young adults. Events have included a youth-related workshop facilitated by representatives from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and Fly Robotics, the leading resource for training in the field of small-unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS).
A Youth Luncheon including more than 500 youth and aviation professionals stimulates conversations in STEM Education. The Collegiate Series includes career development workshops to assist students in navigating the transition from college to career. Lastly, the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Consortium Breakfast engages students, aviation college leaders and airline managers and serves as a think tank for the aviation collegiate sector.
In 2018, more than fifteen hundred aviation and aerospace professionals gathered in Houston, Texas for the 42nd Annual Convention.
The convention featured more than 20 notable speakers, six aerospace professional development workshops and a jam-packed Career Exposition, which provided aviation professionals with opportunities to meet recruiters from 50+ participating companies.
